Schmitz's HISTORY

1934

Hermann Schmitz founds a fire extinguisher company in the German town of Siegen (North Rhine Westphalia).

1961

Wolfgang Schmitz joins his father's company and shifts its focus towards the construction of fire engines.

1964

The first hazmat equipment carrier is delivered, laying the foundation for Schmitz's expertise in hazardous goods, which quickly gains international recognition.

1974

Schmitz Feuerwehr & Umwelttechnik GmbH moves into its own building in Siegen.

1986

The company moves into its own newly built factory in Wilnsdorf (near Siegen).

1989

Dirk Schmitz, the grandson of company founder Hermann Schmitz, joins the company.

1994

The revolutionary “KTLF FUTURA”, specially designed for smaller fire brigades, is launched on the market, adding to the Schmitz product portfolio.
Dirk Schmitz joins the management team.

1995

Dirk Schmitz develops the One Seven compressed air foam extinguishing system and successfully launches it on the market in 1996.

1997

Dirk Schmitz drives forward the Schmitz brand on the global market with initial projects in China and the Middle East.

2002

Dirk Schmitz takes over Schmitz Feuerwehr- und Umwelttechnik GmbH in Wilnsdorf and its subsidiary in Luckenwalde.

2004

Schmitz merges with the French fire engine manufacturer GIMAEX, becoming a global player and one of the largest suppliers to the market.

2018

Dirk Schmitz ends this cooperation and founds Schmitz Fire & Rescue GmbH as part of a joint venture with one of the largest Chinese fire engine manufacturers. The company's headquarters are in Farnstädt near Halle/Saale.

2019

Schmitz Fire & Rescue launches the innovations PolyPlus (copolymer superstructure system), BALLance (slosh protection system) and AXON (electronic control system) and delivers the first large-capacity water tenders with a PolyPlus superstructure and Schmitz One Seven compressed air foam extinguishing systems to the United Emirates. Successful presence at the China Fire trade fair in Beijing. 

2020

The Competence Centre for Environmental Protection and Measurement Technology is founded at the Buchen site.

2021

Reorganisation of the company Schmitz Fire & Rescue as part of self-administration insolvency proceedings.

The restructuring and management of the Farnstädt site are taken over by the industry expert Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Gerd Pohler starting in June 2021.

2022

The Family Office Dana and Thomas Manns takes over the company on 1 January 2022 as part of an asset deal. Schmitz Fire & Rescue GmbH is renamed Schmitz Feuerwehrtechnik GmbH.

All jobs at the location are retained.
